Climate strike: UK school pupils take part in call for urgent action

Thousands of schoolchildren and young people in the UK are taking part in climate strikes with the support of a former UN climate chief, who said it was “time to heed the deeply moving voice of youth”.

Christiana Figueres, who led the historic 2015 Paris agreement, said the fact that children were so worried about their future they were prepared to strike should make adults take urgent action.

Record number of blue whales in Great Australian Bight this summer

Scientists estimate that there are up to 50 blue whales in the Great Australian Bight this summer, the highest number seen since blue whale aerial surveys began in the region.

But it is a fluke researchers know this at all as funding for aerial surveys has been difficult to come by.

This year, blue whales have only been seen in the Bight because they crossed paths with another animal that feeds in the Bight's bountiful summer waters — southern bluefin tuna ...
