Methane Credits

A Dangerous Distraction from Real Solutions

Methane mitigation offers one of the fastest and most cost-effective opportunities to slow near-term warming. However, the evidence shows that methane credits are a fundamentally flawed instrument. Overreliance on offsets diverts attention and resources away from the systemic reforms needed to deliver real and lasting reductions.

Effective methane action requires strong regulation, accountability mechanisms, and increased financial assistance to cut emissions directly at their source, while delivering clear co-benefits for air quality and health. Excluding credits from compliance systems and corporate net-zero claims will keep pressure on governments and companies to innovate, decarbonise, and contribute meaningfully to global methane reduction efforts.
