From Ambition to Action

A Progress Check on Europe’s F-Gas Transition

In February 2024, the European Union (EU) adopted a revised F-Gas Regulation, establishing the world’s most ambitious legislative framework to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and accelerate the transition to natural refrigerants.

Alongside an accelerated HFC phase-down schedule culminating in a phase-out of HFCs by 2050, the EU F-Gas Regulation introduces a wide range of implementation obligations for Member States, including strengthening monitoring and enforcement of illegal trade, updating technician certification schemes, financing refrigerant recovery at end-of-life and removing regulatory barriers to natural refrigerants.
