CITES: ‘Short shrift for the tiger and Asian big cats’
EIA Tiger Campaign head Debbie Banks reports back from the CITES CoP16 meeting in Bangkok on the risible and disappointingly small amount of time allotted to tigers.
After the issue of tigers was repeatedly pushed back and delayed, the meeting finally found time to squeeze in just 15 minutes to talk tigers – that works out at about a quarter of a second for each of the estimated 3,500 tigers left in the wild.
However, the meeting did at least decide to review implementation and compliance of various Parties in respect of CITES reporting requirements.
