Together with our funding partners, we bring unique value through innovative and impactful campaigns to challenge policy and eradicate wildlife crime, harmful business practices and environmental abuse.

Our focus is the protection of wildlife, forests, ocean and climate. We turn the evidence we gather in the field into hard-hitting reports targeted at authorities who can make a difference, and we campaign for improved governance and effective enforcement.

Our four programmes of work are interrelated and address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Our impact is global and fully aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals;

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

We are a ‘force for good’ on the global stage

Throughout our 35 year history, we have managed to secure a raft of positive results for the planet such as securing global bans on commercial whaling and trading elephant ivory, reforming the timber industry to curb illegal logging and leading successful efforts to secure agreements on the production and consumption of climate-changing gases. Today, our undercover investigations continue to expose wildlife crime and the most pressing threats to our natural world.

To amplify our impact, our approach seeks to complement, not duplicate, the work of other NGOs. Whenever we work in or with coalitions, we often drive those, playing a leading and active role.

Wildlife

In the late 1980s, our two-and-a-half-year undercover investigation played a key role in achieving the 1989 international ban on elephant ivory trade. In the mid-1990s we began a campaign to end the tiger trade and more recently we launched a campaign for the protection of pangolins from the devastating effects of wildlife trade.

EIA led a coalition of NGOs to lobby the UK Government to close its domestic ivory market which led the UK Government to announce a ban on the UK domestic ivory trade in 2018 and in 2020 the Supreme Court quashed the antiques trade’s final bid to kill off the UK Ivory Act.

Climate

Rumours of a black market in CFC chemicals in the mid-1990s led our Climate team to investigate the illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances. We were also instrumental in making the case that the Montreal Protocol, which banned CFCs, was the best mechanism by which to phase out the global warming HFCs which had come to replace CFCs. Our work resulted in the Kigali Amendment on HFCs which came into force in January 2019.

Forests

From the late 1990s our investigations into illegal logging across Asia, helped us successfully convince policy-makers of the pressing need to exclude illegally-logged timber from the major markets of the EU and US, which led to the EU Timber Regulation coming into effect in 2013.

Following years of EIA’s campaigning, China amended its Forest Law in 2020 to include a nationwide ban on buying, processing or transporting illegally sourced timber.

Ocean

In 2020, we called for a Global Convention on Plastic Pollution. Political momentum to address the full lifecycle of plastics led to the historic UN Environment Assembly decision in March 2022 to convene an intergovernmental negotiating committee towards a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution.
