Job Description

  • Salary: £34,000 – £38,000 (depending on qualifications and experience)
  • Hours: 40 hours per week, including an hour for lunch
  • Contract: Full time, 2-year fixed term contract
  • Department: Securing Criminal Justice (SCJ)
  • Report to: Securing Criminal Justice Programme Lead
  • Location: London hybrid arrangement

Role Purpose

EIA is seeking a suitably qualified candidate to join EIA’s Securing Criminal Justice Programme (SCJ). This is an exciting opportunity for an individual interested in supporting initiatives to address criminal justice challenges to tackling serious, organised environmental crime, particularly wildlife trafficking in West and Central Africa. The principal activities will include supporting the implementation of project activities, organising and facilitating events in focus countries, tracking and implementation of activities, drafting materials for a variety of audiences, attending relevant national and international meetings and events; communicating effectively with key audiences for advocacy purposes; liaising with EIA staff members and external stakeholders as appropriate; assisting the team with assigned administrative, co-ordination and project monitoring and management tasks; contributing to strategic planning and fundraising.

Organisational matters

The Criminal Justice Specialist will be line managed by the Programme Lead – Securing Criminal Justice and will work in cooperation the Senior Project Officer and with relevant members of staff in all Departments to fulfil the responsibilities below.

The role is based in London, on a hybrid basis (at least 2 days in the office, more expected during probation and induction period).

Key areas of responsibility

Project Implementation

Assist (and occasionally lead) the coordination of activities related to law enforcement, criminal justice or intelligence including facilitating meetings, events and delivering presentations.

Provide specialist input to, write and produce, internal and external outputs to support project activities and for campaigning and advocacy purposes.

Operational Management

Tracking and monitoring of project activities.

Assisting with administrative, coordination, and financial/budget tasks.

Intelligence & Investigations

Coordinate with EIA’s Intelligence & Investigations Unit as necessary

Partner Management

Communicating with partners and stakeholders.

Liaising with EIA staff members and external stakeholders as appropriate.

Fundraising

Supporting the production of grant proposals.

Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation

Assist with the development of regular donor reports including coordination with project partners

Support strategic developments and planning within EIA to address criminal justice challenges in tackling serious, organised environmental crime.

Supporting project monitoring and evaluation.

Person Specification

Essential Experience, Skills and Competencies

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, law or a related area.

Experience

Knowledge, academic specialisation, or practical experience of environmental crime, wildlife trafficking or a related area.

Skills and Attributes

• Organised, innovative and resourceful.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong research and analysis skills and presentation of findings.

• Personable and persuasive approach with an ability to confidently engage partners,

stakeholders and government officials.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Other

• Legal right to work in the UK

• Willing and able to travel outside the UK, including to West and Central Africa and Southeast Asia

Desirable Experience, Skills and Competencies

• Conversational and written proficiency in French or Vietnamese

• A higher-level degree in criminology, criminal justice, law or a related area.

• Knowledge or experience of human rights, corruption, organised crime, counter-

trafficking, alternatives to custodial sentences, deterrents, or environmental security.

• Knowledge, academic specialisation, or practical experience of less developed regions, particularly West and Central Africa and/or Southeast Asia.

• Experience in the NGO/CSO sector.

• Experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships with external contacts.
