Potter, the Simpsons & the sum of Adams’ fundraising!

On March 11, hundreds attended the 12th Douglas Adams Memorial Lecture at London’s Royal Geographic Society..

The annual lecture, held in memory of the late cult author Adams, raises funds for two charities very close to his heart – Save the Rhino International and EIA.

This year’s lecture did not disappoint, with well-known speakers Roger Highfield and Simon Singh examining the scientific and mathematical secrets behind two of popular culture’s most famous fictional worlds.

Roger Highfield shone an illuminating light on the realm of Harry Potter and Hogwarts, revealing the science behind everything from Floo Powder to the infamous Invisibility Cloak and the ‘magic’ that takes place in laboratories around the world.

Simon Singh provided a fascinating insight into the bustling world of Springfield, home to household favourite The Simpsons. Although one of television’s most popular shows, very few realise that the show is riddled with calculus, geometry, theorems and more by its mathematically gifted writers.

With two such respected speakers, it was never a question that the evening would be a huge success! Not only did the audience gain an incredible insight into the mathematics and science behind these fictional worlds, but they got to support two charities in their important work protecting the environment and its biodiversity.

Our gratitude to Vivo Taste, Hit the Theatre and Ethical Consumer Magazine for contributing raffle prizes.

And a big thank-you to everyone who supported us this year – please join us in 2015 for an unforgettable evening with renowned British author Neil Gaiman!
