The government of Botswana’s decision to erect an electrified fence around the Makgadikgadi National Park – the largest wetland habitat in Botswana – is an attempt to address issues of problem animals, livestock encroachment and disease control. However, as the briefing highlights, for the fence to be effective, several key mitigation measures, as recommended by an independent Environmental Appraisal, must be implemented as a matter of urgency.
